As VisionQuesT 4rosso we are thrilled to welcome Roberta Pagano to our represented artists, a naturalist and photographer driven by a profound passion for the Arctic, a territory she has explored and documented across numerous journeys over the years. Through her unique lens, we present a selection of works from the project N78° E15° Svalbard, the coordinates of a frozen world.
Roberta’s work explores an infinite colour palette: shades of white, grey, and blue shift continuously with the changing natural light, giving rise to a harmonious monochromatic symphony. Her images evoke a world suspended in time – primordial and ethereal – where time itself seems to stand still, and every single moment feels steeped in wonder.
A Journey to the Edge of the World
The Svalbard Islands, a Norwegian archipelago nestled halfway between the northern coast of Norway and the North Pole, represent a land of extreme contrasts:
- Polarized Winter: The long winter offers the magnetic and haunting charm of the polar night, illuminated by the glow and magic of the Northern Lights.
- Luminous Summer: The summer season brings an uninterrupted explosion of light, revealing landscapes of rare beauty and hosting iconic wildlife, including polar bears, reindeer, and Arctic foxes that seem to emerge directly from ancient Nordic legends.
Between Fragility and Awareness
Yet, Roberta Pagano’s narrative goes beyond a simple description of a remote and extreme land. Her work brings to light an intricate web of evolutionary relationships, ecosystems, and living creatures, compelling us to become fully aware of their importance. Embedded within landscapes as fragile as they are resilient, these natural elements reveal their deep interconnectedness, reminding us of the fundamental principle that governs every living system.
Her photographs thus tell a story of co-evolution and delicate balance, a theme that today, more than ever, directly touches the history of humanity. Every shot becomes an open invitation to pause, observe, and reflect on the invaluable worth of nature and our own responsibilities: on the role we, as human beings, choose to play each day in protecting or betraying it.
Roberta Pagano: a young Neapolitan nature photographer – though it might be more accurate to call her a “European nature photographer,” given the extent of her professional work across Europe. She, too, trained within the school of Neapolitan naturalists established at the University of Naples Federico II by the late Professor Milone. Her recently published book in English is a collection of photographs and writings exploring the wildlife and landscapes of Svalbard.
