Press Release
"As time passes lost identities are like shadows that oppose oblivion, struggling against silence and indifference. The lack of memory leads to a second death, while stories left unheard await their time to be remembered. One of the aims of Giovanni Sesia is "to bring back to memory those who have been forgotten. Memory is not an act of consolation, but a means to oppose the drifting of times prone to revisions of all kinds; art can become the means of bringing to light the future remained hidden in our past.
In the works of Giovanni Sesia memory exits from basically monochrome photographs - with shades of ochre to sepia -, from mirrors blackened, from faces forgotten, from incomprehensible words written with a fluid and old handwriting, from ancient chants. Sesia operates on the objective reality by reinterpreting it through an alchemical transformation: color, sign, and painting, take over the photograph and take it to a new level, multiple forms and another perspective.
Alchemy therefore: it is no accident that many works are steeped in embossed gold, woven in golden splendor, surrounded by the light and incorruptible glory of this noble metal. Gold symbol of knowledge, spiritual cleansing, striving for transcendence and eternity, nostalgia for a lost El Dorado. The artist, like Celeste Borracino writes, "wants to give back reality as documentation, to stitch together the poetry of memory, to produce in order to evoke an emotion through the experiences of a media that through searching will continue to find”." Biography
Giovanni Sesia is born in Magenta in 1955, where he lives and works. The theme of his research - conducted through various mediums such as photography, painting, installations and writing - is the memory. The elaboration of a personal and collective memory, of melancholy, sweetness and a desire not to lose the meaning of the past, define his intimate and emotional work.
Among his solo exhibitions: Giovanni Sesia (2006, Studio De Bonis, Reggio Emilia); Images found, catalogue with a text by E. Viganò (2005-2006, Galleria 44, Turin); Minor Stories, catalogue with texts by F. Voyeurs and E. Viganò (2005, Galleria Cristina Busi, Chiavari, Genoa); Anthology (2003, Museum Ken Damn, Brescia). Among other collective exhibitions: Ecce Homo, edited by F. Boggiano (2005, Castello di San Pietro in Cerro, Piacenza); Atelier of Artists (2004, Fabbrica Eos, Milan), The Theater of Memory-Biennale Internazionale di Fotografia di Brescia (2004, Museo Ken Damn, Brescia); De cerca nadies es normal (2003, Centro Cultural Conde Duque, Madrid).
