class="siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget">

VisionQuesT contemporary photography is pleased to present Alessio Delfino's solo exhibition “Rêves” (Dreams). Alessio Delfino's great interest in photography and the dark room process, from a young age and his studies in chemistry, have led him to delve into the diverse possible uses of the photographic medium. Already from his first works he is determined to set his sights on the realization of photo series – thus he expresses his artistic search best without it being synthesized in a single image -. He does not aspire to the “decisive moment” in Henri Cartier-Bresson’s sense. Rather he pursues the quasi-cinematographic depiction of the flow of time through images that seemingly want to evoke time’s inexorable ‘nature,’ irreducible to a single shot. With much knowledge Alessio Delfino develops themes that have interested numerous artists and photographers since the beginning of photography, from the “pioneer” Muybridge to the cubist avant-garde: the rendering back of images, of the nature of life, and, furthermore, of the dynamics and three-dimensionality of space and time within the two-dimensionality of photography. In the photographs on show, space, time, reality and dreams come to life not through the clarity of details but rather in abstruse, blurred, indeterminate forms - characteristic of the dream – as if to capture not the rigidness of reality but instead its unending possibilities. Photography used neither as a tool for true renderings of reality nor for synthesized pictures of time, rather as a layering of several moments, to replicate the ceaseless movement of life and to merge multiplicative time and space through the superposition of many takes. By catching a distinct body posture at the instant it persists no more, Delfino fixes his dream onto cotton paper, which thus helps to hold the ethereal form of the figures that seem as if drawn with colored pencils or pastels. The figures blend with the opaque background to uncertain, undefined hues in order to show a fleeting reality – or better: a dream designed to vanish at the moment the observer averts the gaze. Delfino’s artistic search aims at rendering the plurality and variety of the present, as it were, emphasized by the choice of the naked female body, which also serves to evoke a manifold being of creative nature; this search is only possible at an uncertain place, in a flighty, ethereal, dreamlike dimension. Alessio Delfino Poetic statement: “There is a moment in my day, sublime and terrifying at the same time. It is the instant in which my universe remains suspended in a cloud, compressed, between the terrestrial and the ethereal, in a non-temporal time, in an unreal place. It is the moment of awakening, where my dream dimension turns from fluid experience into static fusion. At this moment all that was filmic, sequential and narrative freezes. It is like film wrap that while unfolding, crashes into an invisible wall, resulting in a stop-motion made up of the fusion of a sum of frames. A dreamlike, unconscious image that appears in a place non- place, outside of space-time, but, paradoxically, both real and present. It is here that I live my perception of the dream as intimately linked to the feeling of memory and the drive of the desire to capture the experience into one image. This is where Rêves comes from. The need to give representation to an inner dimension, perceived as an abstract image and at the same time emotionally clear. To be able to render the dream and post-dream experience, aesthetically emotional, as an image of a non-place, a color non-color, static movement, is the desire that has triggered the Rêves project. Through photography, my narrative language, and the human body, my expressive instrument, Rêves recreates, through an elaborate technique developed for over a year, a real but non-existing dimension, an emotional sphere surrounding my being at that particular moment of day. To strive for the realization of the perfect Rêve, that which focuses in a single work, the maximum of emotions, size and magnitude, corresponds to the impulse that generated this series; projecting through a dream dance, a series of images, prompted by the desire to seek perfection. A desire that, by definition (fascinating is the etymology of the word, "de-siderare" to note the absence of stars) is unattainable and insurmountable, becomes the driving force to the realization of a work in itself utopian. In the obsessive pursuit of this sublime utopia, sometimes, in my troubled sleep, I like to imagine myself, as one of those Roman legionaries night guarding the camps, the so-called desiderantes because, while staring at the stars, they waited for the return of their comrades that had gone missing in battle during the day. I desire that in their hearts they knew unrealizable. As I, in my Rêves, await the return of an image, an emotion, dissolved at that moment in which the earthly and the ethereal become one.” Alessio Delfino, March 2016 Technical information: : Ink Jet prints on fine art Hahnemuhle cotton paper – Unique pieces various sizes: cm 32 x 32 (with frame cm 48 x 48), cm 60 x 60 (with frame cm 64 x 64), cm 60 x 120 (with frame cm 64 x 124) and cm 60 x 300 (with frame 64 x 304) Résumé: Born in Savona (Italy) in 1976.
