Bruno Cattani

Biography

Bruno Cattani was born in Reggio Emilia in 1964. He started taking photographs in 1982 and has worked as a photo journalist since 1988. In 1996 he took part in a photographic research on the museums of Reggio Emilia, starting his research on the "Places of art". Over the years he received numerous research commissions in museums such as the Musée Rodin, the Musée du Louvre, the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris, the National Institute for Graphics, the Pergamon Museum in Berlin and the Archaeological Superintendence of Pompeii. He is one of the artists in the “D'après L’Antique” exhibition at the Museum du Louvre and, in the same year, his show “Places of Art” is inserted into the program of the Mois de la Photo in Paris. In 2005 he began his research on memory unfolding like a journey seeking to revive the past with emotional, evocative and narrative images. In the spring of 2010 this became an exhibition “Memorie” accompanied by the book of the same title. In the same year he took part in the third edition of Reggio Emilia – Fotografia Europea.
He was among the artists invited by Italo Zannier to exhibit at the Italian Pavilion of the 54th International Art Exhibition at the Venice Biennale with six photographs from the series “Memorie”.
A series of works dedicated to the body in the world of sculpture, the result of years of research within exhibition spaces throughout Europe, “Eros” was presented for the first time at the Chic Art Fair in Paris in 2012.
Both in 2014 with ”Playing Dreams” a foray into the fantasy world of childhood through toys, and in 2016 with “Carousel” a look into the changing, like dreams, not only the passage of time - the minutes marking the rhythm of a sweet melody that recalls a happy childhood, an innocence vanished years ago - but also the ability of a Carousels to create unreal, out of time worlds, arising from the relationship between them and the location where they are placed, where among his works taken to Arte Fiera Bologna.
He has and is collaborating with several galleries in Italy and abroad and his photos have been exhibited in many Art Fairs in Italy, Europe and the USA (Arte Fiera Bologna, Mia Milan, Turin, Verona, Paris, Brussels, Context Art Miami).
He was among the finalists of the BNL Award at Mia Fair in Milan both in 2013 and 2014, winning the first price in 2015. In that same year the new edition of his book “Memorie” was released with the addition of many new images and published by Danilo Montanari Editore.
In March 2016 his exhibition “The Memory Box” was shown at Palazzo Ducale- Fondazione per la Cultura in Genova, Italy.
His works are part of the permanent collections in the Archives Photographiques du Musée du Louvre, Maison Européenne de la Photographie in Paris, the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts, Museo Archeologico Nazionale of Naples, Bibliotéque Nationale de France in Paris, Musée Réattu d’Arles, Musée de la photographie of Charleroi, Musée Nicephore Niéce Ville de Chalon sur Saône, the United States Museum of Photography, and the Museum of Thessaloniki (Greece). He has been published by many specialized magazines the most recent being Gente di Fotografia and in early 2017 The British Journal of Photography.
